Petanque -- Help the petanque community at UWA to communicate between each other

About Petanque
English (USA)

The Petanque game is a typical French game of bowls. The current form of the game originated in 1907 in La Ciotat, in Provence, in southern France. The name comes from Les Ped Tanco in the Occitan language (South of France), meaning "feet together." It's one of the rare sports where the family can play together and also disabled people.

The aim is, while standing with the feet together in a small circle, to throw metal balls as close as possible to a small wooden ball called a cochonnet (jack). The game is normally played on hard dirt or gravel, but can also be played on other surfaces; some are not suitable like grass and sandy beaches. We can relate this sport to similar games which are bocce and jeu de boules.

It's a great opportunity for the university to get more people into this new sport which is a multicultural entertainment either for a group of players or singles. It can be for pleasure with friends and family or for competitive purposes.

This idea of opening a new sport activity in UWA sports came out after making some friendly and successful competitions in the frame of social events in the Frequency Standards and Metrology Group (FSM laboratory) part of the Physics department at UWA since 2006.

Social games are organised on Fridays 12.30 to 1.30pm between Robert Street Building and Computer Science. For more information email the list.
