Discussion list about Open Source Software in a University Environment. Initially restricted to University of Western Australia Technical-Contactsi but now open.The purpose of the list is to act as a clearing house for knowledge about open source application and system software relevant to the University environment, especially UWA. Low-cost software may also be considered for discussion. It promotes the idea that there may be software "out there" which performs adequately, tasks which are otherwise performed by expensive proprietary software; and which can be scrutinised to check safety for data entrusted to it. Encouraged: Experiences (+ve, -ve) in trialling or using open source products. ____ Queries regarding availability of software to perform function "x".____URL s or other references to critiques of Open Source in general, and reviews of specific products. ____ Experiences (+ve, -ve) on using proprietary application software on open source system software, for example application "x" running on wine on Linux.____ Addresses of local ftp/http mirrors for open source software; UWA has Debian Linux and Star- and Open-Office for example.____ Trimming of previous poster's mail if sending one in reply. Using UniOpenSrc
To post a message to all the list members, send email to uniopensrc@maillists.uwa.edu.au. You can subscribe to the list, or change your existing subscription, in the sections below.
Subscribing to UniOpenSrc
Subscribe to UniOpenSrc by filling out the following form. You will be sent email requesting confirmation, to prevent others from gratuitously subscribing you. Once confirmation is received, your request will be held for approval by the list moderator. You will be notified of the moderator's decision by email. This is also a hidden list, which means that the list of members is available only to the list administrator. Your email address:   Your name (optional):   You may enter a privacy password below. This provides only mild security, but should prevent others from messing with your subscription. Do not use a valuable password as it will occasionally be emailed back to you in cleartext. If you choose not to enter a password, one will be automatically generated for you, and it will be sent to you once you've confirmed your subscription.
